On November 12, 1859, through the "High Order of the Day no. 83," signed by Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the Romanian Military Topographic Service was established, whose traditions are continued, since January 1, 2019, by the Defense Geospatial Information Agency "Major General Constantin Barozzi." The order stipulated the fulfillment of responsibilities, according to Article 7, letter a), regarding "everything related to topographic, geodetic, and statistical works, as well as the creation and processing of plans of this kind and the application of these works to create the cadastral map of the United Principalities," by the Engineering Office, the first military structure of that time specialized in the field of topogeodesy.

The DGIA Geoportal also provides geospatial information produced by the Ministry of National Defense, through AIGA, as part of the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community (INSPIRE/INIS Romania) and in its role as the coordinating public authority for datasets related to geographical names and altitudes, produced according to Directive 2007/2/EC of the European Parliament and the Council from March 14, 2007, transposed into national legislation through Government Ordinance no. 4/2010, approved with amendments by Law 190/2010, with subsequent modifications and completions.
