ALEXANDRU CARCALEȚEANU (sometimes CARCALETEANU) was born on April 5, 1845.
After graduating from the Military Officers' School in Bucharest on July 15, 1863, with the rank of second lieutenant, he was assigned to the Vânători Battalion and, from November 1, 1864, to the "Engineer Battalion."
He continued his studies at the Polytechnic School in Paris and the Artillery and Engineering Application School in Metz, France.
He pursued his military career in the 1st Engineer Battalion and was later appointed a professor at the Infantry and Cavalry School and an officer within the War Depot.
On September 4, 1865, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant.
According to his service record, on March 1, 1866, he was assigned to the "Sapper Company."
From August 1, 1868, he served in the "1st Engineer Battalion," and on August 23, 1869, he was promoted to the rank of captain.
On January 1, 1875, he was promoted to the rank of major.
On April 1, 1879, he was appointed deputy director of the Infantry Military School.
He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on April 8, 1880.
On April 8, 1882, he was again appointed deputy director, this time at the "Application School for Artillery and Engineers."
He was promoted to the rank of colonel on April 8, 1884, and became Chief of Staff of the 3rd Army Corps.
On November 1, 1888, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the 2nd Army Corps, also overseeing the War Depot until 1892.
During the 1877-1878 War of Independence, he served as Chief of Staff of the 4th Division of the Operations Army.
He was promoted to the rank of brigadier general on June 9, 1894.
Starting April 1, 1901, he held the rank of brigadier general and was appointed Chief of the General Staff, a position he held until April 1, 1904, when he resigned and was transferred to the reserve of the 2nd Army Corps.
On May 10, 1905, he was promoted to the rank of divisional general.
On December 1, 1912, he was officially retired due to the age limit, according to Decree No. 4856.
As Chief of the General Staff, he contributed to drafting numerous studies and legislative projects, regulations, and instructions concerning military promotions, inspections, troop evaluations, and maneuvers, including royal ones. He also worked on the role and responsibilities of border guards and covering troops.
He was awarded the "Star of Romania," Fourth Class, in 1891, and on September 16, 1896, he received the "Grand Cross with Star of the Franz Joseph Order."
In 1898, he was granted the "Star of Romania" in the rank of Commander, and in 1902, he became a Grand Officer of the "Crown of Romania" Order.
He also received medals including the "Golden Military Virtue," "Cross of the Danube Crossing," and "Defenders of Independence." In 1912, he was awarded the "Grand Cross of the Order of the Crown of Romania."
The date of his death is unknown.
